🔍 What is Dysplasia?
Dysplasia refers to abnormal joint development, a genetic condition leading to joint laxity, often in the hips or elbows.
⚠️ Most dogs with dysplasia have it in multiple joints.
⚠️ It progresses into osteoarthritis over time.
While primarily genetic, environmental factors—such as obesity—can increase the likelihood of a clinical dysplasia diagnosis. Excessive exercise has not been proven to cause dysplasia, but like obesity, it does not help with joint health.
📌 Hip Dysplasia: The Most Common Orthopaedic Condition
Hip dysplasia is most common in larger breeds, though any dog at any age can be affected.
🔹 Common Symptoms:
✅ Stiffness
✅ Exercise intolerance
✅ Gait abnormalities
✅ Difficulty climbing stairs
✅ Limping on one or more legs
✅ …And more
📌 Dogs rarely show pain at home, making a vet assessment essential—special extension tests can confirm joint issues even when subtle signs are present.
🥩 Can a Raw Diet Help?
Yes! Feeding a raw diet may help reduce pain and inflammation associated with dysplasia.
🛑 Avoid Inflammatory Foods:
❌ Starchy carbohydrates (oats, grains, wheat, rice, sweet potato, squash, carrots).
❌ Synthetic vitamins & minerals (found in kibble & many pre-made treats—whole food sources or 100% natural herbal support are better options).
📌 Additional Lifestyle Adjustments:
✅ Reduce in-home chemical exposure—choose natural cleaning products like those from Ingenious Products.
✅ Consider vaccine alternatives—Titre tests (Vaccicheck) can check for natural immunity instead of over-vaccination. See our blogs on vaccines & natural flea & tick parasite prevention.
🟢 Holistic Joint Support
✔️ Explore alternative therapies like canine massage & hydrotherapy to support mobility.
